The Blair Witch Project meets bigfoot in this contemporary slice of Southern Gothic splatter, which receives its UK theatrical premiere couresy of Cine-Excess VIII. The Wildman of the Navidad sees the legendary Texas Chainsaw Massacre screenwriter Kim Henkel mentoring a new generation of fearmakers, by producing the debut feature of his two former film students Duane Graves and Justin Meeks. The resulting narrative acknowleges a debt to both ‘chainsaw’ heritage as well as the 1970s ‘big foot’ craze, while also showcasing the innovative docu-drama style that has come to define much of contemporary indie-Tex cinema. The film is derived from the real life diaries of Dale S. Rodgers, whose land is reputed to have bordered an area of rural Texas inhabited by a savage beast eager to dispatch unwary hunters and partygoers alike. In their docu-drama rendition of the tale, Graves and Meeks focus as much on the unsavoury domestic arrangements between Rodgers, his disabled wife and their duplicitious home help, as they do on the couple’s outback aggressor. When poverty and hardship befall the family homestead, Rodgers is forced to open up his rural reserve to explorers eager to pursue the Wild Man of the Navidad, with bloody and brutal results …
