Cine Excess VIII - Are You Ready for the Country: Cult Cinema and Rural Excess
The University of Brighton 14-16 November 2014
The eighth Cine-Excess International Film Conference and Festival on Global Cult Film returns to Brighton between the 14th-16th November, with its distinctive mix of filmmaker awards and retrospectives, exclusive film screenings and a themed three-day conference. To coincide with the 40th anniversary of Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel’s ground-breaking backwoods classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) Cine-Excess VIII considers cult representations of the rural space and its inhabitants, analysing the extent to which depictions of the countryside often reveal fascinating issues of class, sexuality, race and regional distinction. Cine Excess VIII is a collaboration between the festival and the University of Brighton’s C21: Centre for research in twenty-first century writings. The festival will host filmmaker awards, retrospectives and screenings at the University of Brighton’s Sallis Benney theatre and the Duke’s at Komedia Cinema, Brighton. Guest of Honour We are delighted to welcome American cult indie legend Jeff Lieberman (Squirm, Blue Sunshine, Just Before Dawn) as the Guest of Honour to Cine-Excess VIII. Throughout his career, Lieberman has crafted a series of prolific nightmare narratives that combined grindhouse thrills with cutting edge social commentary, with many of his celebrated horror titles exploring themes of rural excess central to this year’s festival. Jeff Lieberman receives his Cine-Excess Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday 14th November at 7.30pm in a special onstage Q and A session at the University of Brighton’s Sallis Benney theatre. This special event will be followed by a screening of Lieberman’s influential ‘revenge of nature’ classic Squirm (1976), about electrified earthworms on the rampage in rural Georgia. Scum of the Earth: Horrific Hicks on Film To celebrate this year’s theme of cult rural cinema, Cine-Excess presents the special screening season Scum of the Earth, which deals with some of the most memorable images of ‘horrific hicks’. Screenings occur at the University of Brighton’s Sallis Benney theatre and the Duke’s at Komedia Cinema, Brighton between Friday 14th November and Sunday 16th November 2014.
