The Director Approved Screening of The Bronx Warriors (1982)
Saturday 26th May – 4pm (Following Enzo G. Castellari Interview, Odeon Covent Garden)
Pumped up bodies and post-nuclear anxieties meet in this Enzo G. Castellari 1982 sci-fi splatter classic. The Bronx Warriors kick started the brief but brutal Italian craze for post-apocalyptic flicks, which often combined scenes of sadism, suffering and subterfuge with pointed political commentary concerning society’s dystopic dimensions. Although often criticised as emulating pre-existing hits such as Mad Max and The Warriors, Enzo G. Castellari’s post-apocalypse films can be more clearly connected to the 1950s Italian peplum tradition, through an emphasis on combat, contest and male virility being used to overthrow a fascistic regime. In the case of The Bronx Warriors, the peplum tradition is ensured in a story which deals with a marginal but muscular hero’s attempts to defeat the sinister Manhattan Corporation. Featuring grisly combat scenes, striking cinematography and set design, the film also headlines a fantastic performance from the undisputed king of cult cool: Fred ‘The Hammer’ Williamson.
Enzo G. Castellari has personally chosen this screening to accompany his visit to Cine-Excess VI, and we are delighted that he will be introducing the film on Saturday 26th May at 4pm following his on-stage interview and career retrospective at the Odeon Covent Garden. Screening courtesy of Shameless Films. This screening is open to cinema goers over the age of 18, and the ticket price of £12 each, (£7.50 concessions) is included in the entry fee to the Enzo G. Castellari interview. The screening is also free to all Cine-Excess VI delegates holding a full or day rate pass. Early booking is advised. |
